How To Decide When To Save And When To Splurge

Many people struggle with money issues. Most people want to save and secure financial freedom, but the demands of life can stand in the way. Teaching yourself how to decide when it is time to spend and time to save is essential for striking a balance in your wallet.

The cost of living is pretty high. This can be especially true if you have a family. So in order to treat yourself to that unique hobo bag, you have to control what you spend on a daily level. This may mean saving on your groceries. It may also mean figuring out which gas station offers the best prices. These pennies often translate into dollar savings.

So once you have cut the fat from your finances and have a little money saved up for your extra, make sure you know what you are buying. For instance, there are a ton of hobo bags to choose from. Make sure the designer bag you are buying is the one that fits your wants and needs. Remember, this is not an everyday splurge so treat yourself to something you know you will enjoy and use.

If you are in a serious relationship like a marriage, do not make unilateral financial decisions. Consult your spouse when you want to make a big ticket item purchase. Just because you are in charge of the household expenses, does not mean you get to spend hundreds of dollars on a jewelry set because you felt like it.

If you are in debt, get out of debt before you think about saving and splurging. High-interest debt is eating away at your potential savings. This means that money that could go into savings is going to pay off interest rates. So pay off your debt as soon as possible.

If you are not in debt (lucky you!), make sure you do not get yourself in debt because of the urge to splurge. Maybe you have your eye on an expensive exercise machine. If so, instead of financing, save a little more until you are able to make one time cash payment for your purchase.

How is your savings pulse? If you aren’t in debt, and are saving on your living expenses strike a balance between saving for the things you want and other long-term savings plans. For instance, make sure you have a retirement plan. Keep some away to help your kids with college.

Keeping money tucked away for a rainy day is critical. You can however treat yourself for your hard work every now and then. Before you buy, make sure you have done your homework so as not to regret your splurge!

Never Open Up A New Line Of Credit

Almost everywhere you go these days, people are trying to get you to open up a new line of credit. It is very tempting thought. Imagine being able to buy anything you want from your favorite store. It seems innocent enough too. Especially with a small line of credit that can be paid off quickly. Never open up a new line of credit.

Credit accounts with low limits are easy to keep under control. A card that has a thousand dollars on it can easily skyrocket until it is completely out of control. It starts with higher payments. The trick to keeping a credit card under control is being able to pay more on it. This is often hard to do on a higher account. The only chance of getting the amount down is paying extra. If not, thousands of unnecessary dollars may be spent in interest fees.

So think twice before buying new dining room table set on credit. First thing you know, you need a new refrigerator and there you are. You suddenly have a high balance on your credit card.

Before you purchase anything on your credit card, take a look at a recent statement. Find out what the interest rate is. What you thought it was is not always the same thing. You may be shocked to find that the interest rate has gone up on some of your accounts. Paying attention to the APR (annual percentage rate) is very important. If you knew that some of your innocent accounts are charging you 30% interest, you may forget about having that new appliance. You might decide to buy a used appliance.

Do your best always to pay bills on time. Sears is one example of a company that enjoys charging you a small fee of $39.00 for being late. Mobil is another charging the same amount.

A couple of late fees can shoot that balance sky rocket high! When that happens, you will be using your rice cookers instead of eating out. Pay close attention to those bills.

Thankfully, agencies are finally cracking down on the unfair and corrupt practices of credit card corporations. Their crooked ways have gone on long enough! It is about time that we all learn that having lines of credit is not great honor. We have been robbed!

If you take a close look at a recent statement, you will notice some changes. You will see a diagram telling you how long it will take to pay off your account. It also shows how much extra money you will have paid in interest. If you owe sears $1,692.00, the graph will show you that it will take 21 years to pay this off! This is without any additional purchases. This is by paying the minimum. This does not include $39.00 late fees you are bound to get! Sears also has to tell you that it will cost you $8,166.00 to pay off that $1,600.00 furniture set!

When you know these facts you will be very angry. You might even lose your credit. So next time, when a cashier invites you to open a new account, smile smugly and say, No, I would not like to open a new account! I will purchase my dining room table sets with cash.

What Is it, That Everybody Is So Crazy About Debts ?

If you are just starting spending money and want to set up yourself for the best solution, to stay as much as possible debt free, or you are already trying to come down from your already existing debts, the best rule to handle that most wisely is “to not spend more money, than you personally have available”. The biggest problem you can cause for yourself, is to pretent being “blind” and say, that you have 20.000 $ cash at hand, because you got that much limit on the new Credit Card, you just received. Another point, what doesn’t count as “available” money, is the lend amount, you still have to get back from a good friend. Or your new plan, to sell your house.

The overall bad situation on finances of all these people on the planet, is coming from spending money, what is not yet gotten in their own pockets.

                                  Number-One-Rule

What you don’t have, you cannot spend. Logical, isn’t ?

But … there ARE reasons, where having for example a Credit Card, becomes a big help, because you have to pay for something, you don’t have the money for yet. But it seems extremely important for your immediate and future survival. Please use this card, only for that one thing, so you know exactly, that you can pay it back, easily. And it has to be for something, what changes your life (for sure) to the better.Having a Credit Card can really help you, to get something you urgently need, without friends or family start arguing about “money”.

A Hint For Your Daily Shopping

For a certain amount of time, long enough for a real evaluation, I observed customers, shopping in a “WAL-Mart Super Center”. I found just 2 types of shoppers:

1. The person, who fills the shopping card up to the top and you think, who is gonna eating all of that. And it’s not, what you normally call good nutrition ! It is “food” for watching TV, or coming home and get a little snag in between from the fridge … something like that. They can choose the type of chips they want, the dip, and the type of drink, which should then go with that. I’m calling this the “ruthless shopper”. The present-time enjoyment is more important, than the thought about the money.

2. The person, who comes with his shopping card, and on the “picks” he/she made so far you can see, that this person knows exactly, what is missing in the household, and then this is the person, who is asking for the cheaper products - same quality off course - and “making a face”, if you don’t have it. In the first moment you think these are the Poor (maybe they are !), but then you actually feel lots of respect, because you know, that - whatever their financial situation is - they still do fine. They got somehow that money, they know what it is worth for them, and then they figure out the optimal use for it. They know, that this is all they have, and what they exactly need to buy !

You can see, here are some differences in attitudes.

How can you come down from huge debts ?

First of all, don’t make them too huge, because you cannot come down anymore. There comes the moment, where you have to realize, that “figuring it all out”, doesn’t help anymore. This will be for you the “moment of the truth” .

That’s all, what I can say to it.

But there is a last solution, what is perfect for a handling, but not for your Credit Records. And this is called “Debt Relief”. This means, when you went already on for too long time, suffering yourself through your overcharged Credit Cards, then the government (that’s what I understand - I hope I say this correctly), will help you by law, to bring you freedom.

There are debt-relief companies, they help people in despair, and they talk to the creditors, get a good deal, and the overall amount of debts can go down until the half of it. Because the government or a certain law, will pay/handle the difference. But however it works, the debts will go down dramatically. And so a person can much better deal with it, to more comfortably and relaxed pay it all back.

You just have to think about it, that your entire credit-ability is completely gone, you will have the most worse credit record “in history”. Though somewhere later, you may get it all back easily. But - if you are a business man, or you want to start one, or you need a good finance record somewhere soon again, or you want somehow in the future continue with a normal shopping situation, or getting some new credit for a car etc, then it might be wrong to do that. It is also possible, that, if you are looking for a better employment, that it gets found out as well. Companies watch for such points. If you could make some extra hours on your job, to help to pay it all off yourself, could be another good solution.

Please work it all out, before you jump into it. But it still is extremely helpful, if you know exactly, what you are doing.
